From looking at your skin every day, you'll notice that it changes often. One day it may be glowing, another day you may discover it's tight and tissue paper-like - the hallmark of dehydration.
Our skin is constantly changing. It's a living part of our body and our largest organ, in fact! It defends against environmental assaults and extreme temperatures. It helps eliminate toxins from the body. It heals from cuts, abrasions and scratches. It's continually renewing and protecting. Simply put, skin keeps the bad stuff out and the good stuff in.
But our skin also acts as a barometer from what's going on both externally AND internally. For example, you may experience an eruption of breakouts on the lower half of your face. Is that from holding your phone too close to your face? Or is it because you're feeling stressed? Although we don't welcome breakouts, our skin is communicating with us and could be letting us know that our stress levels are too high.
get to understand your skin with Face Mapping®
A qualified Dermalogica Professional Skin Therapist can perform a comprehensive skin analysis, known as Face Mapping®. Drawing on both Western and Eastern perspectives combined with sight and touch, Face Mapping® helps build an understanding of what's happening in your skin and why.
A holistic approach
Whereas Western medicine treats each organ of the human body in isolation, Eastern - or Chinese - medicine focuses on the body as a whole.
By looking at the skin with an Eastern lens, we get a more holistic understanding of the skin and can connect inner imbalances or stresses with common skin conditions. This allows for a Professional Skin Therapist to help you better understand what the cause of a certain skin change or condition might be, and offer personalised lifestyle education to improve the health of your skin.
what is each zone of your face telling you?
With both a Western and Eastern approach to skin analysis, the face is divided into zones. In Face Mapping® skin analysis, the face is divided into the following zones: forehead, eyes, cheeks, nose, chin, jawline and neck. Each zone is analysed separately, taking both environmental/external factors and internal/lifestyle factors into consideration as to why you might be experiencing a certain condition.
For example, we typically experience dehydration on our forehead - think fine lines, fragile, rough, and often oily skin. This could be caused by makeup, incorrect product use and the weather. Or it coud be due to poor water intake in our diet.
Redness and/or breakouts on the cheeks might be due to using harsh ingredients on the skin, allergies or sun damage. But from a Chinese skin analysis perspective, it may be due to smoking/vaping, pollution, or a recent cough and/or cold.
Fascinatingly, for anyone who gets their period, you will probably breakout on one side of your jawline, just below the mouth, before the start of your period. Stress is also common hormonal cause of breakouts along the jawline in adults. Thinking about external causes, breakouts along the jawline could also be because you touch this part of your face often.
By asking the right questions, a Professional Skin Therapist can work with you to better understand what may be driving your skin challenges, which will likely be something you can manage or even better, eliminate.
