clear skin at every age
True or False?
There is no difference between teenage acne, and adult acne..
The primary causing factors in adult acne are stress and hormonal fluctuations. Adult acne tends to be more inflamed and the skin is generally more sensitised.
It is essential to find products specifically designed to treat individual concerns. Reason being, teenage products tend to be addressing a very oily, thickened skin (which adults don’t normally steer clear off, pardon the pun) whereas products designed for adult acne focus on healing, treating the inflammation and addressing the other issues an adult skin also suffers from.
Introducing Clear Start™ – the acne treatment system for teens from the makers of Dermalogica that’s tough on breakouts, but gentle on the skin.
You’ve seen what Dermalogica can do for your skin, now share the power of Clear Start™ with the teens in your life.
Research shows that most teens get skin care advice from their mothers so be sure to pass on your knowledge and get them practicing good skin care habits that will last a lifetime!

you are what you eat
This age-old proverb may have been dismissed over the generations as somewhat of an old wives’ tale, but there is in fact a real biological connection between our bodies and the food we eat. With technological advances, we are better able to understand how micro- and macro-nutrients affect our health on a cellular level. This notion has even spurred the formation of a Centre of Excellence for Nutritional Genomics (CENG) at the University of California, Davis. Nutritional genomics takes advantage of our knowledge of the human genome to better understand the diet-health relationship. In essence, nutritional genomics is the study of how foods affect our genes and how our genes affect our response to nutrients in our diet – an offshoot of the emerging epigenetics field (which is the study of how our overall environment can change our genes).
So then, if we really are what we eat, what should we be eating for healthy skin? Macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) work together to ensure a properly functioning epidermal barrier against environmental assaults. The skin’s typical ailments range from dehydration, dryness, photo damage, inflammation and ageing. Many scientific studies support the role nutrition plays in these key areas.
A lack of either lipid content or water content means rough, flaky and vulnerable skin. A diet rich in essential fatty acids can help skin retain its organised model. Dietary fats are processed by the liver for delivery to skin and other tissues. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for skin function and can even modulate the skin’s inflammatory response. Chronically dry skin, as in Eczema, will benefit from a diet rich in EFAs from oils and whole foods. In particular, Omega-3 fatty acids can help protect skin from photo damage and photo aging, while Omega-6 can alleviate symptoms associated with skin sensitivity and inflammatory skin disorders.
Stock your pantry cupboard with Salmon, Flaxseed Walnut, Evening Primrose and Borage Oil.
As we know, the sun is a powerful star. UV rays penetrate through clouds, windows and our own skin layers. UV rays deplete antioxidant levels in the skin, including ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E). A diet rich in these antioxidant vitamins can be part of a well-rounded approach to limiting photo damage. An added bonus to vitamin C? It is also a necessary component of building collagen in the skin, which decreases with age and even more so with sun damage. Like many nutrients, some are even better when combined. Supplementing the diet with Vitamin C and E combined can increase the photo protective effect of our skin better than with either of these alone.
Be sure to add these foods to your diet;
- Bell peppers
- Wheat germ
Our skin is a unique organ in that we can actually rub nutrients on top of it! So even though the upper epidermal layers of the skin do not contain blood vessels that supply the cells with nutrients, we can ‘feed’ the skin from the outside, with topical antioxidants and vitamins. Combining topical nutrients with a more conscious effort to eat whole, healthy foods will keep our skin shining for all the years to come!

Flying high or flying dry?
As the autumn chill sets in, we sit at our desks and dream of faraway exotic holiday destinations and relax our racing minds on a tropical beach. But when the time comes for take-off, this dramatic change in climate combined with air conditioned rooms and the cabin pressured flight can leave us looking less flying high and more flying dry! Never fear, Dermalogica has have plenty of tips to ensure your skin is radiant, healthy and keeps hold of that summer glow for longer!
jet-setting tip #1
Treat your skin with respect at all times. Our skin is our largest living organ. As it is ‘living’ we need to remember that when travelling to new climes it takes time to adjust and may become sensitized. So make sure that your skin care regime is on the gentle side. Use a Sponge Cloth for cleansing and stick to bottled water rather than tap when washing the delicate face area. When applying moisturizer imagine your fingers across the skin using light, upward, circular movements. Then when it comes to eye cream, apply underneath from the outer to inner eye, then from the inner to the outer eye above the lid. When applying any product to the skin, keep those fingers feather light. This will not only keep skin calm but also safeguard against dragging, contributing to unnecessary fine lines!
jet-setting tip #2
Keep skin hydrated during flying. The low humidity on a plane causes essential moisture to be sapped from the skin leaving you looking like a dried prune after ten hours in the air. Guard against dehydration with a silicone based moisturizing gel that will form a barrier against moisture loss. Also, try to book yourself a hydrating skin treatment right before you fly and immediately when you return … get to the airport early and you can even do this while waiting in departures! For an at home treatment that will restore critical moisture to stressed skin before you fly, try our Skin Hydrating Masque
jet-setting tip #3
Instant redness reducer. If you experience redness at the first hint of any lifestyle change you will need to travel with some emergency anti-inflammatory goodies. To reduce the appearance of redness on the skin apply a soothing booster that contains red raspberry extract such as Gentle Soothing Booster. The Vitamin P in the raspberries works by strengthening the capillary walls and helping to reduce the inflammation to avoid dilated capillaries. Use UltraCalming Mist to combat redness and hydrating while in-flight, it reduces redness up to 30% in 30 minutes! Keep this product in the fridge of your hotel room for the ultimate skin soother at the end of a hot and humid day.
jet-setting tip #4
Avoid all products with S.D. (specially denatured) alcohol. This ingredient can irritate, strip and dry the skin and is often found in toners as well as some hair care products. All Dermalogica products are free of this type of alcohol. Also remember to stay clear of mineral oil, and any artificial colour or fragrance. These ingredients can act as a block against moisture and can trigger irritation. Particularly nasty when flying as the skin needs all the moisture it can get!
jet-setting tip #5
The sun is enemy number one to the skin. Daily sun protection is absolutely essential every day of the year but particularly when spending time in direct sunlight. If you truly value your skin you will always apply and reapply your sun block. Look for a minimum SPF15 and apply about a teaspoon for your face and shot glass worth onto your body every two-three hours for maximum protection. Our Solar Defense Booster SPF50 be combined with any moisturizer, body lotion or liquid foundation, giving these items instant SPF cred. There is no such thing as a ‘safe tan’ except when it comes from a bottle!
jet-setting tip #6
Your skin loves vitamin therapy. Whether in flight or after a day admiring the sights, skin is parched. For instant rejuvenation, apply products with a cocktail of Vitamins such as A, C and E as well as the very healing Panthenol (pro vitamin B5) and essential fatty acids. Find these in single dose treatments or power packed masque products such as our MultiVitamin Power Recovery® Masque. Apply after cleansing as a revitalizing remedy for dull, dry, dehydrated, lacklustre, photo damaged skin. Just one application may have your skin looking soft, supple and radiating good health.
jet-setting tip #7
Get smooth, silky lips. Use our most gentle exfoliant that’s ideal for even the most sensitive skin, Daily Microfoliant®. With rice bran powder, it gently ‘polishes’ the delicate skin of the lips allowing your lipstick to have a flawless finish. Follow with Climate Control barrier balm to repair damaged skin and seal in moisture.
jet-setting tip #8
Spritz, spritz, spritz.! Hot temperatures and air conditioning cause your skin to dry out as moisture moves through osmosis from the area of greatest concentration to the lowest, toner can transform this. We’re not talking about the old fashioned wipe off with cotton pads kind, but the spritz, refresh and hydrate variety. Look for humectants such as glycerol and honey that will bind vital water to the skin for all day long fresh skin. Try the MultiActive Toner to keep your skin smooth and refreshed. And they can be used over make-up too! Follow this with a lanolin and mineral oil free moisturizer such as Active Moist to seal in moisture and acts as a barrier to keep all the dirt and pollutants out.
Happy skin, happy travels!
